Kim Dietrich
Kim has worked as a fisheries observer in the North Pacific Groundfish Observer Program intermittently from 1990 to 2005 and the Alaska Marine Mammal Program (1991). She has also worked as a field coordinator for one of the Alaska observer providers in Dutch Harbor from 1994-96. She became involved in the APO in 1996 when she committed to working on one newsletter, the first Mail Buoy. Little did she know that this would be the beginning of a long-term commitment to helping lead the APO and helping guide efforts to unionize observers in the North Pacific.Although Kim's time commitment to the APO is waning, she firmly believes in the educational component of the APO's mission. She would like to see more observers recognized for their data collection and ideally, would like the APO to facilitate more interaction between observers and data "end" users. Kim is currently working with the Washington Sea Grant Program on seabird bycatch issues and has been heavily dependent on observer data collected in Alaska.
